Topic 1. Human relationships

Balance in Love

Well balanced state keeps our world and life in order. The nature is kept in balance by the laws of nature: the law of gravitation, the law of preserving energy, the law of rejecting vacuum and so on. And if on our planet any physical object is unbalanced, the laws of nature immediately bring it to the state of balance. For example, if we throw a stone high up into the air, the force of gravitation will bring it back to the ground, and rolling for a while, it will stand still and well balanced.

The life on our planet physically would be impossible without the nature laws established on it.

On the other hand, Man has established his own laws of coexistence. These laws are supposed to keep our souls in the state of balance, and to my mind, Love is the most effective impulse for doing it: Love towards our parents and close relations and even towards strangers, Love towards our beloved one, Love towards our occupation, Love towards our home-town and country. However, people very often don’t realize this simple truth and occasionally become negative impulses for unbalancing the souls of others. For example, a scene in a market for fruit and vegetables in Yerevan:

“How much are these oranges?”

“800 drams a kilo.” (2 Euros)

“What?, 800 drams for these juiceless, rotten oranges?”

At this point both the seller and the buyer are upset, nervous and depressed. They are in a stressful situation. Their souls are unbalanced. If time travel were possible I would get them back and conduct the conversation in this way:

“How much are these oranges?”

“800 drams a kilo.”

“ What? 800 drams a kilo? Then they must be very juicy, tasty and sweet. But would you cut down the price a little?”

“ Sure..”

Now both the buyer and the seller are full of positive impulses and, therefore, are trying to please each other. They are full of love and respect and are ready to transfer it to other people needing love and respect.

What great things in our life would have been done if people had loved and respected the importance of one another a little more! Politicians would have loosened the tension on the hot spots on our planet; charity-mongers wouldn’t have advertised every tea-kettle in nursery homes; every child would have been brought up in a loving family atmosphere.

When in the 1960s the famous Armenian actor Mher Mkrtchyan was being shot in the film “Aibolit 66” in India, there happened something which might be a sort of lesson for selfish, proud, self conceited, self centered  and arrogant people. Mher Mkrtchyan was coming back to the hotel very tired after a day of hard work. The shooting of the film had taken place in a swamp area. So he was tired and decided to take a taxi. Most of the taxis in that city were rickshaws then. (a two-wheeled oriental man pulled carriage)  Mher Mkrtchyan’s rickshaw was being pulled by a thin pale boy of sixteen. The weak boy could hardly pull the rickshaw. Despite his overwhelming efforts the little boy every now and then turned his head back and smiled to Mher Mkrtchyan. Mher couldn’t stand it any longer. He was feeling discomfort. And he wouldn’t have been our favourite Mher if he hadn’t restored the state of his love balance. Suddenly he stopped the rickshaw, got off it, took the boy in his arms, put him on the seat of the carriage and began pulling the rickshaw himself. He was pulling the rickshaw and every now and then was turning his head back and smiling to the pleasantly astonished pale boy. Our Mher was happy again. His soul was in triumph; it was balanced in love: a natural state of being for our great actor.

Questions for discussion

1. What should the human relationships be based on according to the text?

2. Why did Mher Mkrtchyan himself pull the rickshaw?

A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed

I am on friendly terms with a lot of people but I can’t call them all my friends. To my mind one can only have one or two close friends. When people become friends, they should have a lot of common things. They should have a common approach to a certain phenomenon in life. If a man is an extremely honest person, he can’t have a friend who is a scoundrel. First of all a real friend

must be true and devoted. I hate selfish people. A true friend is reliable. He is a friend in need. This is very important because in our hard life we come across difficulties at every step and we need someone to understand us, to help us to overcome these difficulties. My close friend’s name is… . I don’t have to try to make her (him) understand my own problems. Neither does she (he). I am always ready to share her (his) sorrow and help her. I am interested in her problems and she (he) is interested in mine.

We don’t choose our parents but we choose our friends. We choose friends according to our spiritual interests. And we develop our world outlook mainly by means of our everyday contacts with our friends. If I read an interesting book or see an interesting film, I am always glad to share my impressions with my close friend. So is she (he). In this way we enrich each other.

-Can you give us an example from your real life which will show your friend’s devotion to you?

-Sure, Last year I fell ill and had to miss several lessons. My friend came to our place and brought me his notes which helped me much and I didn’t fall behind in my studies.

Possible questions:

Is it easy for you to make friends with other people?

Which characteristic features do you appreciate in your friend?

Do you reproach your friend when you don’t like something in his behaviour?

Topic 2. Sports and Games: Healthy Style of Living

– Do you go in for any kind of sports?

– I go in for basketball at our school and I approve of a healthy style of living. Every morning I do physical exercises. In addition to playing basketball our coach also organizes mini competitions in running and jumping.

– Do you think that going in for sport makes a person stronger both in body and character?

– Yes, of course, besides gaining physical strength a person becomes more purposeful, firm in character and hard-working. No sportsman can make any progress without these characteristic features. But from my point of view going in for big sport and striving for new records may have destructive influence on health. If a person has a great ambition to become a championor set up a new record, he will have to train for 6-8 hours a day  which may later cause heart problems.

– What kinds of sports and sport games are included in the summer Olympic games?

– First of all, I would like to mention athletics which is considered to be the Queen of sports. Various sport events are included in athletics: running different distances, jumping, throwing a discus, javelin and a hammer, jogging and so on. The next kind of sports is gymnastics which is a very difficult kind of sport. Other kinds of summer sports are: swimming, wrestling, weight lifting, boxing, horse riding, cycling, yachting, archery, shooting, fencing, rowing and diving. I can mention such sport games as: basketball, volley-ball, hand-ball, water-polo, grass-hockey, lawn tennis, table tennis, football.

What winter kind of sports and games do you know?

In winter Olympic games the sportsman compete in the following events: figure skating, skiing, skating, ice-hockey, slalom, biathlon, sledging.  From my pint of view the most beautiful kinds of sport are figure skating and art gymnastics which are combination of art and sport, grace and strength, freedom of beautiful motions combined with music. On the other hand, I don’t like boxing, wrestling and weightlifting which are demonstrations of rude strength only. I am especially against such sport games as American football and rugby. These sport games provoke rudeness, cruelty and wickedness.

Different nations have kind of sports which are popular only in their own countries. For example, sumo i Japan, Rodeo in Spain and Mexico, cricket and fishing in England, gorodki in Russia, Sabanduy in Kazakhstan and Kokh in Armenia.
