E.Hemingway wrote this story during the years of great depression in the 1930s. The great writer liked to write about old men: Old Man and the Sea, Old Man at the Bridge, A Clean Well-Lighted Place.

The writer shows that old men want nothing because their life has come to nothing. He has no wife, no children, no job. He has nowhere to hurry. All he needs is a clean well-lighted place where he can sit and drink with dignity. He doesn’t want to go to bodegas because they are not clean. The young waiter didn’t understand the old man. He didn’t understand why that old man didn’t want to go home. The young waiter was hurrying to go home where his wife was waiting for him in the bed. On the other hand, the old waiter understood the old man very well because he himself was an old man and had nowhere to hurry after work. Nobody was waiting for him either. The world is nothing to him and to that old man who left the café with a dignity. I

I think the most impressive part of the story is when the old waiter is walking aimlessly and praying to himself. He is telling the prayer “Our Father” changing nearly all the words into nada (nothing).

Our nada who art in nada, nada be thy name thy kingdom nada thy will be nada in nada as it is in nada. Give usthis nada our daily nada and nada us our nada as we nada our nadas and nada us not into nada but deliver us from nada; pues nada.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'”
